Stories
of Making Fenton Glass
Bill Bedilion, Chief Shipping Clerk, put his shoulder against the
heavy door of the boxcar. It ground open, spreading a widening slice
of sunlight over the bales of straw inside the car. Atop one bale,
which had been broken, lay a man blinking at the bright light like
a straw-covered owl.
“Where am I?” the owl asked
“You’re at the Fenton Art Glass Company in Williamstown,
West Virginia,” Bill said. The year was 1907.
“Well, take me to the shop,” the man said, knocking
the chaff from his old clothes with a sweat-stained felt hat. “I’m
going to show you how to make a new kind of glass” The new
glass the stranger made was iridescent. It was a dark glass which
seemed to have the hues of the rainbow flowing over its surface.
Today it is known as Carnival Glass to eager collectors of antique
American glass the world over. |
